Computers like attributes and links

Software and data engines make sense of data by considering its larger context. This happens by looking at so called meta-data which is data that provides additional information. Maybe you are familiar with tags? A tag is a piece of meta-data that connects elements across different categories. Tags are just one example of meta-data.

When creating any profile on any platform, provide details – aka meta-data

Whether you are creating a profile on a dating site, putting your house on the market, or listing your website in a forum – FILL OUT THE DETAILS!

You’d be surprised how many people have a Google+ profile and omit to provide the platform with enough information. This is insane. After all, Google operates the search engine number one, so why would you not give it plenty of information.

Going the extra mile

You have to look at this like going the extra mile. By taking a few more minutes to provide meta-data, you increase the likelihood of reaching your target audience immensely.

Still not convinced?

Let me give you a few examples:

  • You are browsing profiles on a dating site. Do you even look at the entries without picture and decent description?
  • You are looking at listings on a real estate platform. Do you consider entries without a price, and/or without pictures?
  • You look at a Google search engine result page. Do you browse to the site that only shows a title and no short summary?

I hope you start realizing how important meta-data is for your business and your personal projects.
